Arrived Wednesday, 8:00 PM. Mom and Dad circled the airport a few times in their convertible, waiting for us to get our luggage. We climbed in and drove to the Best Western on the island and after we hauled our stuff in we walked down to Times Square and ate dinner at a beach side restaurant, listening to the surf! Margarita and enchiladas for me. We had a great flight, easy airport experience, and were ready to sleep hours later!
Thursday we woke and ate breakfast at the hotel, then sat in the sun by the pool, checked out the shops downtown in Times Square, and then readied to go to the Twin’s Game. We arrived there later than we hoped, but saw Kevin Slowey and mom got his autograph! We bartered a bit for our tickets, but they were for sale in abundance. Mom and Dad had good seats and we were up in the upper deck, but under an overhang. We enjoyed the people around us and enjoyed a few snacks. It was 78 degrees at game time and the Twin’s went ahead early. There were a few outbursts of rain – some pretty heavy – but we were protected by the overhang for MOST of it. The wind must have changed direction and we did get dumped on! The game was called at the bottom of the 8th inning, so we didn’t get to see fireworks, but it was a fun atmosphere! We ran to the car and went to Walmart in the downpour, completely soaked! We looked a fright. Bought some groceries and then drove back to the hotel. It was late.
Friday was a rainy day! It was record-setting rain for FL and there were flooded streets everywhere. We were lazy! We slept til almost 10:00 and then ate breakfast, slowly got ready. Mom and dad were supposed to go to the Twin’s game that afternoon, but it was cancelled and they will get refunded their money. We watched the Office on hulu in the lobby while our room was cleaned, and then headed over to Sanibel Island and Captiva. We paid the $6 toll to get over the bridge and then cruised the island, looking for the Shell Museum. We found it and then watched a movie about shells, which was pretty fascinating! Then we looked at the exhibits and asked where to go shelling. The lady said there’s a beach off Algiers, so we found it and went shelling for an hour. It was amazing, to be on a beach made of shells. We picked up our fill of shells, took fun pictures, and then headed north on the island to Captiva, where we found The Bubble Room, a cute restaurant that was very quirky! We ate a delicious meal, followed by dessert to-go! A piece of incredible orange flavored cake with brown sugar/almond crunch between the layers and yummy orange cream cheese frosting. Absolutely delicious. When we got home, Marissa and I walked down to the Times Square area and went to the Yucatan Bar and Grill for a drink – it was quiet there, so we went to Jimmie B’s Roof Top Lounge, and it was quiet there, too! Marissa hypothesized that spring breakers are all crashed, already! Too much fun in the sun!
Today was beautiful! We got up, ate breakfast, and then walked down to the Times Square area for Shrimp Fest! Lots of vendors, a parade, artists, good times! We shopped a little, and then headed back to the hotel for some sun worshipping! We tried to keep out of the wind, as the temp was only about 73, so although the sun felt beautiful we would get goose bumps if the wind could get to us! We did a lot of walking on the beach, a few dips in the pool, a little snacking on vegies. Marissa and I took a walk down to the Lani Kai – the spring break paradise! It was madness down there. Hundreds of people. Just hundreds. Loud music, DJ, dancing, shaking butt contests. We went to the Top O’ The Mast bar for a world famous RumRunner – and got to keep the glass! It was delicious and potent! Then we came back to the hotel and grilled steaks and ate them while watching the Gopher’s ball game. Then more walking around Times Square! Back down to Lani Kai (much quieter after dark) and then to Nervous Nellies, where Matthew McConnoughy’s look alike was bartending and teaching 7th grade. :) Then more stores, and more walking!
And now, waiting for the Powerball… we’ll see if we have to go home tomorrow!
